Launch of the new written calculations policy – Maths Workshop, March 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
On Wednesday 2nd and Wednesday 9th March St Jude’s launched our new Written Calculations Policy for Mathematics to parents from Reception to Year 6, in a workshop entitled ‘They didn’t do it like this when I was at school’.
The workshop aim was to help our parents learn how to support their children with the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Their child’s class teacher modelled how to use the written strategies for that year group and then parents had the opportunity to ‘have a go’. We warmed up with a game of ‘Round the World’ and ‘Multiplication Bingo’ focusing on multiplication facts to 12 x 12.
Both sessions were very successful due our parents embracing the calculations so positively, and the preparation and delivery from our teaching staff.
In the evaluation forms at the end of the session 100% of parents found the workshop to be useful and would recommend it to other parents in the school, with one parent calling it “brilliant” and “incredibly helpful”. Another parent said that she now “understands why her daughter is always telling her she is wrong” when completing Maths homework together!
Please explore the links below to continue to support your child at home.
Thank you.
